KIDS FROM KA-NA-TA

GRASSROOTS PROJECT 2000-2001

Introduction

In October Room 124 became involved in the KIDS FROM KA-NA-TA program. This program joins classes from across Canada into "triads". These triads then learn about each other's community, culture and ancestory. The schools that we were partnered with were William Mason School in Choiceland, Saskatchewan and Wagmatcookewey School in Wagmatcook, Nova Scotia. Our classes exchanged "wampum boxes" which were filled with information and items which gave an idea about our communities. We also completed projects and posted them onto our own triad area Kloqowejk (an aboriginal word for stars) on the KIDS FROM KA-NA-TA system. We also had the opportunity to chat online with students from each of these schools. The students in Room 124 enjoyed participating in this project. The following contains information about our projects.

We studied several different cultures and looked at their gifts to modern day Canada. We studied Native Legends and looked at what the Aboriginal population has given , such as canoes. We studeied traditional foods such as corn and bannock. To make this more multicultural we also studied China and looked at the products that have been invented by the Chinese, including kites and noodles. We also tried foods from both cultures. We performed poerty written by Pauline Johnson an Aboriginal Canadian poet at an assembly.
